Much of present day Malaysia consisted of British colonies and protectorates until it was occupied by Japan during WWII. The Federation of Malaya gained independence in 1957. In 1963, Malaysia was formed, adding Singapore and parts of Borneo. The first years featured a Communist insurgency, confrontations with Indonesia, and Philippine claims.
