Senegal was granted independence in 1960 after merging with French Sudan. That union lasted only a few months. Senegal joined with The Gambia to form Senegambia in 1982, but that also didn't work out. It was dissolved in 1989. Since the 1980s there has been conflict, but Senegal remains a stable democracy.
