Burma was part of Britain's Indian empire for many years. It became a self-governing separate colony in 1937 and gained independence from Britain in 1948. The country was ruled by military rulers until 1990, when the National League for Democracy won in a landslide victory. But the military junta placed their leaders under house arrest.
