The area of Bangladesh was ruled by the British for many years. In 1947, West Pakistan and East Bengal separated from India and became Pakistan. East Bengal became East Pakistan in 1955, but it was a two part country with two widely separated parts. East Pakistan seceded from West Pakistn in 1971 and became Bangladesh.
