Medical terminology is a language all its own. If; however, you know the meaning to a few basic word parts, you will have some understanding of the language used to communicate in the healthcare industry. For example, if you know that cardi/o means heart then you know that the words cardiomegaly, cardiology and carditis all have something to do with the heart. And if you know that -megaly means enlargement, -ology is the study of and -itis means inflammation then you can figure out that cardiomegaly is enlargement of the heart, cardiology is the study of the heart and carditis is inflammation of the heart. Learning a few root words, prefixes, suffixes and symbols will significantly accelerate the learning curve when communicating in medical terms.
