Dr Pepper is a carbonated beverage that was created in the 1880s in Waco, Texas by Charles Alderton. It was first served in 1885 and first marketed in the U.S. in 1904. Dr Pepper is marketed as having a unique flavor, and includes variations that are made without high fructose corn syrup, or a diet version. When Dr Pepper was served in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition it was made with 23 flavors. The formula for Dr Pepper is a secret, with the actual recipe being kept in two halves in different banks in Dallas, Texas. At one point it was rumored to contain prune juice but the company states this is not true.

Dr Pepper was first marketed as an energy booster and brain tonic, which was common for early sodas at the time.
Rumors exist as to the origins of the name, including that it gives a pep after drinking it, or that it was named after a real doctor.
The period after the abbreviation Dr. was removed in the 1950s for legibility and style reasons.
Dr Pepper has sued Coca-Cola a few times, once for selling below trade, and once for trademark infringement.
Sugar-free Dr Pepper was first introduced in 1962 as Dietetic Dr Pepper but it was not well received. In 1966 it was renamed Diet Dr Pepper.
Pepper Free was on the market from 1982 to 1985 as a caffeine-free and diet version of Dr Pepper.
Caffeine Free Dr Pepper was released in 1983.
Variations of the original Dr Pepper include Dr Pepper Red Fusion, Dr Pepper Cherry Vanilla, Dr Pepper Berries and Cream, Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Heritage, Dr Pepper Vanilla Float, Dr Pepper Zero, and Dr Pepper Cherry.
Most Dr Pepper products contain high fructose corn syrup as opposed to sugar.
Heritage Dr Pepper was made with real sugar.
Unlike Pepsi and Coca-Cola Dr Pepper does not have a complete bottling and distribution network in the United States. It is often bottled by Pepsi or Coca-Cola bottlers.
Dr Pepper is the oldest soft drink brand in the United States.
There is a Dr Pepper museum located in Waco, Texas.
Before the soft drink was named Dr Pepper it was referred to as Waco.
Some people like to heat Dr Pepper and add lemon.
Dr Pepper is owned today by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
The inventor of Dr Pepper, Charles Alderton, was a pharmacist.
