Miami Beach is located in Florida's Miami-Dade County on the east coast. Miami Beach was a swamp until the 1920s when development began. Miami Beach is an island city separating the Atlantic Ocean from Biscayne Bay. In 1915 a bridge was built to connect the island with the mainland. There is a lot of Cuban influence in the city due to the influx of Cubans escaping Cuba when Fidel Castro took over in 1959. Miami Beach has the largest Art Deco collection of architecture in the world, in an area now known as the Art Deco District. Miami Beach is a popular tourist destination and has over 91,917 full time residents.
