The Georgian golden age was during the 11th to the 13th centuries, but it was ended by the Mongol invasion in 1236. The country became part of the Russian empire in the 19th century. After the Russian revolution, Georgia got three years of independence before being forced into the USSR. Independence was regained in 1991 when the USSR was dissolved. Progress toward democratization has been made, but disputes between Georgia and Russia over Abkhazia and South Ossetia have resulted in violence and then a five day war between the two countries.
