Croatia was originally part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom which in 1929 became Yugoslavia. After World War II, Yugoslavia become a Communist state. Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, but it took four years of fighting to clear the occupying Serb armies.
