The Old Man and the Sea Important Characters
Santiago - the old man from the title, he is a practiced fisherman who has not caught anything in eighty-four days. He enjoys spending time with the boy, who looks up to him, and discussing baseball. In his youth he had been called The Champion for his arm wrestling skills. After a struggle and injuries, he is able to catch a great marlin but the sharks eat all the meat, so he returns to shore with just a skeleton of the great fish.
Manolin - a young boy who loves the old man and first began fishing with him when he was five years old. He often assists the old man by bringing him supplies and food, but his parents have asked that he no longer fish with the old man due to his bad luck.
The marlin - the fish that the old man catches measuring eighteen feet long. He is tied to the side of the boat so that the old man can bring him home, but slowly the sharks come and eat all of his meat before they reach shore.
Joe DiMaggio - a real baseball player who played on the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1951, he never appears in the story but is often talked about by the old man who greatly admires him, especially because DiMaggio's father was a fisherman.
