American Born Chinese Part III Summary

This section focuses on Jin who is asking Wei-Chen to cover for him while he goes out with Amelia. His mother feels he should concentrate on studying, not girls, so he was forbidden to date until he finished graduate school. Jin had to ride Amelia to the movie theater on the handlebars of his bike since he couldn't drive. The exertion made him sweaty, so during the movie, he snuck out to the bathroom to rub soap in his armpits. When he returned, he put his arm around Amelia. As they exited the theater, he noticed soap bubbles on Amelia's shoulder that had seeped through his shirt. Although Amelia never said anything, Jin wondered if she noticed or if she thought he was odd.

The next day Jin told Wei-Chen his concerns, and Wei-Chen said he would try to stealthily find out. Wei-Chen also said that Jin's mom had called looking for him, so Jin was not only forced to talk to her for two hours but also has to go shopping with her on Saturday. When Wei-Chen saw Amelia, he asked how the date went, and she said she had fun with no mention of bubbles. Jin had daydreams about his future with Amelia. After school Greg came up to Jin and asked him not to go out with Amelia anymore because he wanted to make sure she made good choices as they entered high school. Jin was mad, but he agreed.

The following day Jin ran into Suzy after school as she waited for Wei-Chen to finish in math circles. She told him how she was dragged to Lauren Suzuki's birthday party that weekend even though they had stopped being friends years ago. Lauren's mom just wanted to hang out with Suzy's mom, so Suzy spent the party watching tv alone. Then at school that day Timmy had called her a chink, so Suzy began to cry. Jin thought it would be a good idea to kiss Suzy to make her feel better, but she punched him in the face. Wei-Chen came to see Jin at his house later that day looking for an explanation. He said that he and Jin were like brothers, so he didn't see how Jin could do something like that. Jin became offended saying they were not alike and that he thought Suzy could do better than an F.O.B. like Wei-Chen, so Wei-Chen punched him in the face.

When he finally fell asleep, Jin had a dream about the herbalist's wife asking him what he'd like to become. In the dream he saw himself transforming into a Caucasian person. When he awoke, he looked in the mirror, and he had become white. He decided to call himself Danny.

The next section jumps to Danny who finds his cousin standing on a table in the library singing "She Bangs." He grabs him by the hair, drags him home, and slaps him. As Danny continues to hit him, Chin-kee warns him that he's making a mistake. Then Chin-kee breaks out his Chinese food inspired kung fu moves. When Chin-kee says he loves America and will continue to visit Danny forever, Danny gives him a strong uppercut, which takes Chin-kee's head off and reveals the head of the monkey king. The monkey king reveals his true form, and then he reveals Danny's by turning him into Jin Wang.

The monkey king explains that he's an emissary of Tze-Yo-Tzuh and that Wei-Chen is his son. For his test of virtue, Wei-Chen had to live in the mortal world for forty years while staying free of human vice. After Wei-Chen lied to Jin's mother, he decided he no longer wished to be an emissary because humans sickened him. Instead he would live a pleasure-filled life and refused his father's visits from then on. The monkey king advises him that he would have saved himself a lot of pain if he just could have seen how good it was to be a monkey; then he leaves. Jin goes home and tells his parents that Chin-kee has left. Jin goes to a Chinese restaurant and stays there until closing and continues to do it every day for over a month until one night Wei-Chen shows up. He tells him about his father and apologizes to Wei-Chen. By the end of the conversation, they seem to be friends again.
