Michelle Knight is a young woman who became well known after being kidnapped at 21 and held captive for more than 10 years by Ariel Castro. She was born on April 23rd, 1981 and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. She is short and received the nickname 'Shorty' in high school, where she was also bullied. At 17 she was reportedly assaulted. She dropped out of high school at 17 after becoming pregnant with her son Joey. He was taken away and placed in foster care following an injury as a toddler. When she was 21, on August 23, 2002, Michelle left her cousin's house and vanished for more than 10 years. She was rescued, along with Gina DeJesus in May, 2013, after a third captive Amanda Berry managed to escape.

Michelle Knight's mother is Barbara Knight and she has twin brothers named Freddie and Eddie.
Michelle Knight wanted to become a firefighter and later on changed her career aspirations to being a veterinarian.
As a child Michelle was raised in poverty and was sexually abused by a male family member.
At 15 Michelle Knight ran away and began living under a bridge to escape her family life.
Michelle Knight's son Joey, who was taken away by children's authority due to an injury caused by her mother's boyfriend, was later adopted by a family member.
When she was 21 Michelle Knight was kidnapped by Ariel Castro after leaving her cousin's house.
During the first eight months of her captivity Michelle Knight was unable to bathe and was abused regularly by Ariel Castro.
Castro gave Michelle a puppy but after seven months it turned on him and tried to protect her. Castro killed the dog.
During her captivity Michelle became pregnant five times. She lost the baby each time due to miscarriage. Castro was violently abusive to Michelle which is the reason she likely miscarried each time.
Castro kidnapped Gina DeJesus and chained her and Michelle together. The women became very close.
Castro kidnapped a third victim Amanda Berry, along with her 6 year old daughter.
In May 2013 Amanda and her 6 year old daughter escaped when Castro left the home.
Amanda directed the police to Michelle and Gina and they were rescued as well.
When Michelle was released from the MetroHealth Medical Center on May 10th she had several health issues including loss of vision, deafness in one ear, stomach infection, and facial and nerve damage.
Michelle Knight stayed in assisted living until 2013.
In 2013 Michelle appeared on the Dr. Phil show to share her ordeal.
In 2014 Michelle released a book titled Finding Me? A Decade of Darkness, a Life Reclaimed.
Ariel Castro was sentenced in August 2013 to life in prison plus 1000 years for his crimes.
The house in which Ariel Castro kept his victims was demolished.
Ariel Castro hung himself after one month in prison and died on September 3rd, 2013.
Michelle Knight changed her name to Lily Rose Lee.
