Snowball tree, also known as guelder rose, is a type of deciduous shrub or small tree that belongs to the moschatel family. It originates from Europe, northern parts of Africa and central parts of Asia, but it can be found all over the northern hemisphere today. Snowball tree prefers areas with sandy, loamy and clayey, well-drained soil. It grows in areas with temperate climate, exposed to direct sunlight or in the partial shade. People cultivate snowball tree mostly in ornamental purposes.

Snowball tree can reach 10 to 15 feet in height and 15 to 25 feet in width.
Snowball tree produces three-lobed leaves with roundish bases and coarsely toothed edges. Surface of leaves is wrinkled and their veins are prominent. Leaves are oppositely arranged on the branches. Snowball tree is especially beautiful during the autumn when it is covered with yellow and red colored leaves.
Snowball tree produces tubular flowers arranged in the form of large, spherical clusters that can reach 8 inches in diameter. Clusters of flowers look like large snowballs, hence the name "snowball tree". Flowers are white colored and they contain both types of reproductive organs (perfect flowers).
Snowball tree blooms during the spring and summer. Flowers are very fragrant and they attract butterflies, which are responsible for the pollination of this plant.
Fruit of snowball tree is ovoid-shaped, red, opaque drupe. It contains one seed. Fruit is arranged in dense clusters at the end of the branches.
Snowball tree propagates via seed and cuttings.
Fruit of snowball tree represents important source of food for the birds in the wild. They eliminate undigested seed via feces and facilitate spreading of this plant in the wild.

Snowball tree is also known as European cranberry (due to similar looking fruit). Despite the name, these two types of plants belong to completely different families (they are not closely related).

Snowball tree is perennial plant, which means that it can survive more than 2 years in the wild.
