Figwort is herbaceous plant that belongs to the figwort family. It originates from Europe, Central Asia and North America. Figwort grows on the moist soil (sandy, loam and clay) in areas with temperate climate. It can be found on the sunny locations or in the partial shade along the river banks, in the wastelands and open woodlands. Figwort was popular and often used in treatment of various disorders in the past. This plant is still available and used as herbal remedy today. Besides in medical purposes, people cultivate figwort because of their ornamental flowers.

Figwort has erect, succulent stem that can reach 3 to 4 feet in height. Stem is square-shaped on the cross section.
Figwort has horizontal rootstock (underground stem) that is able to produces buds and new plants.
Figwort develops ovate or lanceolate-shaped leaves. They are toothed on the edges and oppositely arranged on the stem.
Flowers of figwort are arranged in pyramid-like, loose, multi-branching inflorescence (panicle). Individual flowers are tubular, with lips-like openings. Flowers have five petals that can be purple or green colored. Fusion of two petals creates upper lip, while remaining three petals form bottom lip.
Figwort blooms from June to August. Flowers of figwort contain both male and female reproductive organs (bisexual flowers). They attract bees and wasps that are responsible for the pollination.
Fruit of figwort is oval capsule filled with seed.
Figwort propagates via seed and root division.
Scientific name of the genus figwort is "Scrophularia". Name refers to the fact that this plant was used in treatment of various scrofulous conditions (tuberculosis and other disorders that are characterized by eruptions and swellings).
Figwort was initially named "throatwort" because of the ability of the plant to cure ailments associated with throat.
Figwort contains substances that possess anti-inflammatory (prevent inflammation) and diuretic (facilitate removal of excess water from the body) properties.
Leaves and root of figwort are used in treatment of various disorders. Best medical effects of figwort can be accomplished when plant is harvested during the summer, when it is in bloom.
Leaves of figwort can be used in the form of tea and tincture. They are used in treatment of psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, disorders associated with lymph nodes and intestinal system.
Dry root of figwort is used in treatment of abscesses filled with puss, open wounds, tonsillitis and swollen glands in a throat.
Figwort has unpleasant taste and odor, but it can be consumed without any side effects. This plant was used in human diet in the past when other food sources were not available.
Figwort is perennial plant (life span: more than two years).
