Katy Perry is an American singer and songwriter who began her career as a gospel singer and later became famous as a pop star. She was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25th, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, to Mary Christine and Maurice Keith Hudson, both pastors in the Pentecostal church. Her uncle Frank Perry is a film director. As a young child Katy moved around a lot as her parents were setting up new churches in various regions of the United States. At 11 her family settled in Santa Barbara again. As a teenager she had to sneak popular music CDs as it was discouraged in her home. She completed her GED at 15, and left school to study music. She attempted a gospel music career briefly but soon switched to popular music and changed her name from Katy Hudson to Katy Perry, her mother's maiden name. Her breakthrough came when she was signed to Capitol Records in 2007.

Katy Perry changed her name from Katy Hudson to Katy Perry because she was being confused with the actress Kate Hudson.
